Medical and Nursing Education

As a Director of Surgery & Critical Care and a volunteer-surgeon in remote parts of the world, I’ve seen and managed some of the most complicated cases. As a clinician and administrator, I've led the transformation of a local trauma program into an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center at Richmond University Medical Center. As an educator, I've been commissioned by medical schools and hospitals around the world to devise surgical curricula and board review materials for over 20 years. An award-winning research scholar, I’m also perennially invited to present at the most prestigious international conferences on Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care. I'm currently a senior fellow at ACS, ACCP, and East.

He is currently Associate Dean Medical Education and Head of the Educational Unit at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. He is a practising paediatrician and Assoc Prof in The Department of Children’s and Women’s Health, Dunedin School of Medicine.

Ralph has an interest in teaching clinical reasoning in the clinical setting and by using virtual patients. He designed undergraduate paediatric curricula using a presenting complaints format at the University of Auckland and James Cook University. He has presented workshops on teaching clinical reasoning at international conferences. His research interests include clinical reasoning, curriculum development, e-learning, teaching clinical skills, the clinical learning environment.

Rose E. Constantino, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, FACFE, is Associate Professor and Fulbright Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Department of Health and Community Systems. She teaches Forensic Nursing based on the content of a book she co-authored “Forensic Nursing: Evidence-based Principles and Practice” published by F. A. Davis in 2013. Her pro bono family law practice representing clients in court is founded on her research on the consequences of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) on the health, safety and well-being of women, men and children worldwide. Her current research is in evaluating the effectiveness of online and mobile delivery of health interventions to survivors of IPV as a disruptive innovation (HELPP Zone app) in building healthy relationships and preventing intimate partner violence. She is a 2016 Fulbright Scholar, 2016 Sigma Theta Tau International GNLA Mentor and 2016 ANA Jessie M. Scott awardee.

I started to teach public health nursing and psychiatric-mental health nursing as soon as I completed my Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree in 1962 at the Adventist University of the Philippines (formerly Philippine Union College). I then taught psychiatric mental health nursing at Spring Grove State Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. In 1971, I taught psychiatric mental health nursing at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing after receiving my Master’s (1971) and PhD (1979) degrees. I completed my law degree in1984 (evening program) while teaching psychiatric mental health nursing. I continued to teach undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing since 1971 up to the present. My teaching experience relates to my psychiatric mental health nursing experience, family law practice and research studies on health outcomes of women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) and women whose spouse committed suicide. I guest lecture on the ethical and legal issues in nursing practice and in the role of nurses, family health nursing, continuing education for nurses, lawyers and physicians in caring for women and girls in IPV. Currently, I teach several courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs: Fundamentals of Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing; Advanced Forensic Nursing; Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing Practicum; Forensic Psychiatric Mental Health, Correctional Nursing; and Independent Study. These are all Web-Based/Web-Supported courses, conducive to students’ learning and work scheduling needs. I have developed a Certificate Program in Forensic Nursing as a global project.

Sawsan H. Ezzeddine is Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the Makassed University of Beirut. She was President of the Federation of National Nursing Associations for 8 years (1992-2000). She has drafted the current Nursing Order Bylaws submitted to the Ministry of Health and approved in 2002. She has received the Nurse of the Year Award offered by the WHO and the Order of Nurses in 2007. She has participated in many national research projects by the MOH and WHO to promote the nursing profession in Lebanon, and member in many professional associations. She completed BS in Nursing from American University of Beirut in 1980, Masters in 1983 and PhD in Education from the Lebanese University in 2014.

Nursing and Health Sciences

Dr. Shargall completed his medical school and bachelor in medical sciences and immunology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He then completed cardiothoracic residency at the Haddasah University Hospital of Hebrew University Jerusalem, followed by cardiac and thoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto. Since 2004 he practiced thoracic surgery at the University of Toronto, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital (both in Toronto). Between 2007 and 2010 he was the director of medical education at St. Joseph’s Health Centre and the associate director of undergraduate education at the department of surgery, University of Toronto. Since October 2010 he is the division head of Thoracic Surgery at McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery at McMaster University and an adjunct Associate Professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. He is the local LHIN 4 (Ontario) thoracic oncology lead and serves at multiple expert panels for Cancer Care Ontario. His main research focus is on post-discharge care for thoracic surgery patients and he has received numerous grants, including the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Heart and Stroke Foundation and Ontario Thoracic Society. He is currently chairing the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ working group on VTE in Thoracic Surgery.

Surgery

Dr. Lori A. Loan, PhD, RN, FAAN is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, U.S.A. She received her BSN degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and her MS and PhD degrees from the University of Washington, School of Nursing in Seattle, WA. She has extensive experience as a nurse scientist and mentor. Dr. Loan has completed 48 sponsored research studies with grant funds totaling over $6,000,000, and has 33 data-based, peer-reviewed published papers. Her research efforts led to improved policies, staffing models, training programs, and other practice and health services enhancements.

Healthcare

Evridiki Papastavrou is an assistant professor at the Cyprus University of Technology teaching the Fundamentals of Nursing and Nursing Science. She holds a PhD and a Masters Degree in Nursing (University of Athens and University of Manchester) and a degree in Public Administration. Dr Papastavrou served as a President of the Nursing and Midwifery regulatory body in Cyprus for 6 years (2006-2012) and is an active member of the National Alzheimer’s committee of experts. She also served as a consultant for the evaluation of nursing education programs in Cyprus and in European peer assessment missions concerning the recognition of professional qualifications. Dr Papastavrou is involved in several international research projects and is a reviewer in many nursing journals.

Dr Papastavrou research interest focus on the concept of care form several different perspectives, like the burden of care, caring behaviours, individualized care as well as the organizational and moral aspects of care.

David Randall, Ph.D. currently serves as Executive Director of the Consumer Driven Health Care Institute based in Washington, DC. (www.cdhci.org) and is Resident Scholar with the American Research and Policy Institute in Washington. Dr. Randall has testified before both U.S. House and Senate committees of Congress on a variety of health policy issues and has extensive experience as a former top insurance regulator, legislative staff member, health care lobbyist, consultant and executive with not only insurance companies, but also with several provider trade groups in Washington. He has over two dozen peer-reviewed and professional publications as well as book chapters on health care entitlements and the policy process surrounding health care reform. His research includes study of Medicaid entitlements and privatization, Health Insurance Exchanges and health care information technology. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science (Policy Analysis and Administration) from Kent State University.
